Biography: Alphonse Mucha was was born in 1860 in Moravia in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now the Czech Republic), and died at the age of 78 in 1939. He started out painting theatrical scenery, and later attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In 1887, he went to Paris, where he began his career as a poster artist. Mucha was a principal figure in the (or "New Art") art movement. Other artists who worked in the Art Nouveau style included Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Gustav Klimt, Aubrey Beardsley, and Koloman Moser. While Mucha's art style was considered old fashioned during the latter part of his life, it was later to influence psychedelic poster artists of the 1960s.
