Biography: Wassily Kandinsky was born in 1866 in Moscow, Russia. He died in 1944 at the age of 78 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. He originally studied law and politics at the University of Moscow, but began studying art and painting in 1896 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. Kandinsky was repatriated to Russia during the First World War, but returned to Germany after the Russian Revolution, where he taught at the Bauhaus starting in 1922.

After the Bauhaus was shut down by the Nazis in 1933, Kandinsky moved to France and became a French citizen. Originally influenced by the Impressionist and Fauvist painters, Kandinsky helped to found the Blue Rider (or Der Blaue Reiter) group of artists, which also included Franz Marc, August Macke, Alexej Jawlensky, Lyonel Feininger, and Paul Klee. Marc and Macke were killed while serving in the First World War. (Return to Top.)
