Henri Matisse, French Fauvist Painter: Open Window, Collioure, 1905 Biography: Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambresis, in the north of France. He died in 1954 at the age of 84 in Nice, France. Initially studying law and working as a court administrator, but took up painting after an illness. He studied art at the Academie Julian starting in 1891. Influenced by the Post-Impressionists, Matisse first adopted the Pointilism of Paul Signac. After 1905, he spent increasing time in the south of France, associating with a group of painters who called themselves the Fauves (or "Wild Beasts"), including Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy, and Maurice Vlaminck. Fauvism exulted in an often counter-representational use of brilliant colors, flattening the picture into planes, prefiguring the more purely abstract art styles that were to follow.
