Biography: Edward Hopper (1882-1967, U.S.) was born in Nyack, New York. Hopper studied art at the New York School of Art, where he came under the tutelage of Robert Henri. Hopper is sometimes thought of as belonging to the Ashcan School, but while there are obvious affinities between his work and that of the Ashcan artists, its lack of clear social commentary and greater universality marks Hopper's art as clearly distinct.

Hopper is influenced by the 19th century American realist masters, Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins, although the ambience and style of his paintings is much more modern. He died in 1967, aged 84, in New York City.
