Biography: Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986, U.S.) was born in Sun Prairy, Wisconsin. She began studying art at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1905, and then attended the Art Students League of New York City starting in 1907, where one of her early teachers was William Merritt Chase. After working as a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia for several years, in 1924, O'Keeffe married the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who was 23 years her senior.

Through Stieglitz, she was introduced to his circle of friends, including artists and photographers such as Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, and Edward Steichen. Starting in 1929, O'Keeffe started living in New Mexico for part of each year. After Stieglitz' death in 1946, she moved there full-time until her death, at the age of 98 in Santa Fe.
