Biography: Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, France, and died in Giverny, France, at the age of 86 in 1926. He was influenced by Edouard Manet early in his career, and then later by J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. (It was from Constable that Monet picked up the practice of painting wet-on-wet in unmixed colors, which became typical of most, although not all, Impressionists.) It was from Monet's painting, Sunrise, Impression, that the Impressionist movement took its name. Monet believed in painting directly from life, en plein air, which was to typify many of the principal Impressionist painters, such as Camille Pissaro, Pierre-Auguste Renior, and Alfred Sisley.
