Biography: Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 near Vienna, in Baumgarten, Austria. He died in 1918 at the age of 55 in Vienna. Beginning at the age of 14, he studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts to be an architectural decorator. Klimt gained artistic recognition and success painting murals for public buildings in and around Vienna. In 1897, Klimt was one of the principal founders of the Secession (Sezession) art movement in Vienna. Other participants in the Secession movement included Koloman Moser, Egon Schiele, Oscar Kokoschka, and Otto Wagner. Klimt has also been associated with the Art Nouveau art movement. Klimt quit accepting public mural commissions in 1894 after his work was criticized for its erotic content. Besides his murals, he is also known for his landscape paintings.
