Special Characters: The ISO-8859-1 and Unicode Character Sets

The extended, or special, characters that should be displayable in all web browsers are defined by the ISO-8859-1 character set, also sometimes called the ISO-Latin1 character set. HTML 4.0, additionally, allows characters to be displayed from the Unicode character set, although browser support for this is less than universal (and none at all for older browsers).
